5th Ward Elyria Councilman Marcus Madison, working with Nextdoor, is proud to strengthen the organizational efforts of community organizers in building better neighborhoods. Nextdoor (www.nextdoor.com) is a private online social network designed to foster more active and integrated conversations within the neighborhood. The collaboration will further help neighbors stay informed and help improve communication about important community and safety updates by connecting them through secure neighborhood websites and a mobile application.

Residents can use their personal Nextdoor websites to get to know their neighbors, ask questions, and exchange local advice and recommendations with fellow residents and community leaders. Neighbors in South Elyria currently are piloting the Nextdoor website to more conveniently share information about neighborhood safety issues, local events, local businesses, lost pets, and much more.
"A safe city is a successful city, said Councilman Madison. "To maintain and improve our quality of life, we must ensure that our basic health, safety and welfare are protected. We should also continue to celebrate our community assets such as parks, farmers markets, walkability and bikeability of our neighborhoods."
5th Ward residents will receive relevant community updates from Councilman Madison via his own Nextdoor website. Councilman Madison currently uses additional social media platforms, including Twitter and Facebook, to post updates on local news, services, programs, free events, and emergency notifications for residents.
"Partnering with Nextdoor is another step forward in our community's adoption of strategic technology that will allow us to better serve our residents," said Councilman Madison. "Nextdoor gives Elyria neighbors an easy way to organize, connect and communicate with those who live around them. It also provides community organizers with a direct line of communication to residents about important and often critical updates."
Nextdoor is free to residents. The site is specifically designed to make neighbors feel comfortable sharing information with one another in order to build stronger communities. Each neighborhood establishes and self-manages its own Nextdoor website and all members must verify that they reside within their neighborhood. Information shared on Nextdoor is password-protected and cannot be accessed by those outside the neighborhood. Further, information on Nextdoor cannot be located on Google or other search engines. Nextdoor never shares personal information with any third parties, and unlike an email listserv or other online groups, neighbors’ posts are organized and archived for future reference.
