2013 Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay & Poetry Contest


The Elyria Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission is sponsoring its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Essay and Poetry Contests for public and private school age youth who reside or attend school in the City of Elyria.  There are three categories: participants in elementary grades 4 and higher, middle school and high school.  Students are encouraged to research the life, work and teachings of Dr. King with the focus of the essay or poem on: “Live United: One Dream One Purpose.” 

The essay or original poem should not exceed 1,200 words and must be typed and double spaced (this equates to between one and three pages).  The entry should include a cover page with the title, student’s name, school and grade. The deadline to submit essays or poems for contest consideration is Friday, December 14, 2012, 4:00 p.m. at Elyria City  Hall, c/o Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission, (c/o Office of Equal Opportunity) 131 Court Street – Suite 301, Elyria, OH 44035.

Entries will be judged on: 1) Appeal, 2) Appropriate development of theme, 3) Use of language as it relates to the theme (no profanity), and 4) Emotional response.

The amount of $50.00 will be awarded to the winners in elementary and middle school categories.  The winners in the high school category will receive $100.00 cash.  The contests are sponsored this year by United Way of Greater Lorain County.  Essays and poems will be displayed throughout the Elyria Public Library system.

Contests winners will be recognized during the Elyria Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community-wide Celebration at Elyria High School on Monday, January 21, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.
